  4.     Many people hang up when they answer the phone and hear a
  5. computerized voice, figuring it is probably a prerecorded sales
  6. pitch. Not the folks in Osage, Iowa. Their police department
  7. pays for a telephone-dialing computer service that automatically
  8. checks up on older people who live alone. At the same time every
  9. day, the computer calls them and says, "Good Morning! Are you
  10. O.K.?" If they answer "Yes," the computer hangs up and goes on
  11. to the next number. If no one answers, the computer alerts the
  12. police.

  14.     Developed by Bruce Johnson, a local computer hobbyist, the
  15. program saved the life of Clyde Ritter, 73, when he fell into
  16. a diabetic coma, and rescued another older resident, whose hands
  17. had become stuck in a window.
